Social Committee
The Social Committee at Bet Aviv planned last year's Membership Picnic. It was held on Septermber 18, 2005 at the home of Faye and Morris Levine. Famous Dave's catered the food which included BBQ chicken and brisket. The picnic served two purposes. First the picnic was a way for members to meet and get to know each other in an informal setting. Secondly it served as an informal way for prospective members to get to learn about Bet Aviv and its members.
Doug Cotler's Concert Entertained Delightfully!
On Sunday, April 23, Bet Aviv sponsored Doug Cotler for an afternoon concert. The son of a Cantor and a Cantor in his own temple of Or Ami in Los Angeles, Doug also finds time to do 70 or so concerts during the year. He is a Grammy winner for his song in the movie, Flashdance, and has produced countless tapes and CDs.
His show consisted of a variety of songs, some religious, and some folk. He outlined the history of Jewish music, which was based on the folk songs of the countries where Jews lived. Some are based on German drinking songs. His take on ‘traditional’ music was that the music is always evolving and that many of the tunes we think of as traditional are only 30 years old.
The Bet Aviv choir joined Doug for two songs and everyone enjoyed Doug’s rendition of the Beach Boys’ "Baba-ba Ba-ba-bar-ann to Ba-ba-ba Ba-ba-re -chu."
It was a wonderful concert which everyone seemed to enjoy. Many thanks go to Judy and Jeff Zaller, Cantor Margery Auerbach, Issac Bankman and the Bet Aviv Choir, Ira and Judy Dwoskin, Connie Aaronson, Chelle Ginsburg, Barb and Bob Hurwitz, Beverly Koren, Barbara Levine, Phyllis and Bernie Nash, Toby Devens, Judy Silver Weisberg, Peter Axelrod and Howie Feldmesser who made the concert possible and successful.
