Oneg Shabbat

Participating in an Oneg Shabbat is a Mitzvah that enhances the warmth and closeness among our congregants.  At Bet Aviv, we take turns serving as hosts and coordinators.  If you are unavailable on your assigned date, please make every effort to trade with someone else and notifiy your weekly coordinator of the new arrangement.  The coordinator for each service will contact the other participants to make arrangements for your participation to setup the room, serve as greeters and distribute wine.  The ark and bima also need to be set-up and stored.  If you would like to sponsor an Oneg to celebrate a Mitzvah, please contact one of the overall coordinators to make arrangements.

Click on Oneg Instructions to learn how to set up for an Oneg or to set up the room.

Shabbat Service Honors
Each Shabbat our Ritual Chair contacts congregants to offer them the special honor of partipating in the service.  Our members recite Shabbat candle blessings and participate in all aspects of the Torah service - from opening and closing the ark to reciting the Torah blessings.  To assist those who have agreed to participate, we've published a list of instructions so that you'll know exactly what to do.  Click here for the Shabbat service instructions.
Shabbat Services

Our Rabbi calls Bet Aviv "a learning congregation" and he never misses a chance to teach us.  His sermons are a mix of relevant topics of the day and Torah discussions.  Throughout the service our rabbi may read us some of his favorite psalms or a poem that he finds moving and appropriate for the occasion.  Our cantor leads us in a variety of music, from traditional to modern, designed to please every ear and expectation.  On occasion we have musical accompaniment or singing by our choir to enhance the service.

Following the service, we all gather at the back of our sanctuary to recite the prayers for the wine and bread.  An especially warm tradition at Bet Aviv is that we hold hands as we recite the Ha Motzi.  Following the prayers, we all gather to catch up with the news our fellow congregants have to share and to meet newcomers.

If you would like to experience a Bet Aviv service for yourself, please contact us to let us know you're coming, so we can greet you.  You are most welcome to join us.
